Gilbert Burns is submitted by Gabriel Almeida with a heel hook at UFC BJJ 12
The former MMA fighter opened with a takedown, but was caught in a heel hook 26 seconds before the end of the first round in Las Vegas.
Gilbert Durinho Burns lost to Gabriel Almeida at UFC BJJ 12 on Thursday (8) at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. Almeida submitted the Brazilian with a heel hook at 4:34 of the first round in the middleweight match.
How the match went
Burns started well: he defended a guillotine attempt and scored a takedown early on. Near the end of the round, Almeida took Burns to the mat, attacked the neck and switched to the Brazilian's left leg, where he locked the heel hook that forced the tap.
Burns, who left MMA, came into the event saying he would compete aggressively and that a submission over Almeida could put him in the mix for a title.
A night of submissions
Burns's match was part of a run of quick submissions on the card. Of the six non-title matches, five ended by submission in the first round. Among them, Brazilian Thaynara Victoria submitted Danielle Kelly with an armbar at 2:53.
In the night's main event, Cassia Moura beat Adele Fornarino by split decision and became UFC BJJ's first double champion.
