How to choose your first gi without throwing money away
Fabric weight, weave, size and the sizing mistake almost every beginner makes.
Your first gi doesn't have to be the most expensive one. It has to hold up in training, fit well and meet the competition rules.
Weave and fabric weight
The pearl weave is light, dries quickly and is the most common for people who train every day. The gold weave is heavier and tougher. To start out, pearl is usually the best choice.
Size: the most common mistake
Cotton gis shrink in the first few washes. Check the brand's size chart for your height and weight, and wash it in cold water, drying it in the shade.
Competition rules
At IBJJF competitions, the gi must be white, blue or black, with pants and jacket in the same color. The sleeve must reach close to the wrist with the arm extended.
