IBJJF scoring: the quick guide to not losing a match on the details
Takedown, sweep, pass, mount and back. How much each position is worth and what the referee needs to see.
Many tournament matches are decided by two points or by one advantage. Knowing exactly what the referee is counting changes how you manage time and position.
How much each position is worth
- Takedown: 2 points
- Sweep: 2 points
- Knee on belly: 2 points
- Guard pass: 3 points
- Mount: 4 points
- Back take: 4 points
The 3-second rule
For the points to count, the position has to be stabilized for 3 seconds. Got there and lost it right away? At most, you get an advantage.
Advantages and penalties
An advantage is awarded when you almost complete a scoring position or almost submit your opponent. It breaks ties, but it loses to any point. Penalties for lack of combativeness also count in the tiebreak, so stalling can cost you.
Tip from the mats: drill your escapes knowing the score. Rolling "for points" at the academy gets your head ready for competition day.
